Representations of Women Throughout Time

I am really looking forward to completing this course. Growing up in a family with 4 times as many females as men, I have been learning about and interested in the ways women are represented for as long as I can remember.
The first movie I ever watched was the Sound of Music (1965), with the strong character of Maria as my introduction to women in media. The image below is of her as she faces some drastic changes in her life, having just been 'kicked out' of the convent, and moving into a new job.

As you can see, she is a character that any young girl could look up to, as she goes through the movie bringing happiness to those around her.
However, not every movie, or other text types, portray women in such a positive manner. Looking back now, I am extremely thankful to my parents for not encouraging me to watch T.V., as even the shows that are directed towards an audience of young girls represent women in rather questionable ways.
I am very much anticipating learning more about how women are, and have been, reflected in media and literature.

Best Actress 1976 + 1991 Academy Awards

A character analysis and comparison of the roles demonstrated in the Best Actress category at the 1976 and 1991 Academy Awards Background The two films under the spotlight are One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Misery (1990). Women Over Time Even before this unit, the representation of women had been a topic I was interested in. With social media nowadays, the subject comes up even more often, and has sparked many debates and protests. However, when the unit began, I realised that the sexism experienced by women was still a major ongoing problem in our society. Women are often portrayed as inferior to men. They are objectified, and pressurised to be physically beautiful, because society has forced them into believing that that is their role. Society has guided them from a young age, through books and movies and toys, to care more about their appearance than their aspirations and goals. Men, on the other hand, had whatever they needed to achieve their dreams from a young age. Wanted to become a police officer? Buy a toy gun. Wanted to be an explorer? Grab a pair of binoculars.
