Intial Response to Representations of Women over Time

The representations of women over time has never been a topic I immersed myself into or even gave too much of a thought to before starting this unit. I'm astounded by how in-depth and diverse the content is, ranging from the beginning of recorded human history to modern day and even the future. 

I'm looking forward to discovering more about how the representation of women in different cultures have changed around the world and how this is represented through forms such as film and literature.

I think this unit is a very good way to allow myself to find another point of view to explore areas of history that I have learnt and can put new meaning to.

One aspect that I found very interesting and I feel shows a good representation of society at the time are movie poster. These have changed immensely over the last century or so. 

The following are a examples of various highly rated films at their time. 


How Bella Was Won (1911) USA

The review of this movie done by The Moving Picture World in 1911 says, "The story is concerned principally with the love affairs of Harmon and Bella."


Sunset Boulevard (1950) USA
The plot of this movie derives from a former silent-movie star who is trying to make a come back and through twists and turns a man who she believed was in love with her falls in love with another women leading to a tragic ending.

      Sunset Boulevard is a fantastic film, one of my favourites! Not sure if you have noticed the poster for it on my classroom wall?

Girl With A Pearl Earring Johanne Vermeers' Girl with a Pearl Earring Painting In the novel "Girl with a Pearl Earring" the story rotates around the character "Griet" and her life as a maid for the painter Johannes Vermeers' family, and all the ups and downs of her life working for them, including when Vermeer paints her for his, now world famous, painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring." Women Over Time Even before this unit, the representation of women had been a topic I was interested in. With social media nowadays, the subject comes up even more often, and has sparked many debates and protests. However, when the unit began, I realised that the sexism experienced by women was still a major ongoing problem in our society. Women are often portrayed as inferior to men. They are objectified, and pressurised to be physically beautiful, because society has forced them into believing that that is their role. Society has guided them from a young age, through books and movies and toys, to care more about their appearance than their aspirations and goals. Men, on the other hand, had whatever they needed to achieve their dreams from a young age. Wanted to become a police officer? Buy a toy gun. Wanted to be an explorer? Grab a pair of binoculars.
